Matthew Piper lived a frugal existence but on his death , aged 90 in 1820 ,
he left a small fortune that was to be used to endow both a soup kitchen for
the poor and set up the Marine School on the town's High Street. This educational
endowment was later transferred to Richmond School. Richmond School used to
be in Catherine Street and it is alleged the Trust gained £100,000 when
this site was redeveloped for the Safeways/Morrisons store. In 1908 the Pipers
charity was split into the Pipers Endowment and the Pipers School site trust.
It is now the Piper Educatiional Trust and can give awards to help local students
go on to university. Now administered via Copeland Council..income of £6,000
so may have circa 200,000 in capital (unverified).
