WHITEHAVEN
Rugby League club posted their largest crowd of the season for
the Cumbrian derby win against Barrow – and that was despite the
game being
shown on live television. The
official attendance given on the night and in the media was 2,708 –
but
that was before the 279 ladies from the midnight walk who’d come
along were
added, meaning there were actually 2,987 in attendance. That is over 900
more than have attended any other game this season and only a couple of
hundred short of their record crowd of recent years, when 3,366 turned
up
to watch them play Castleford in 2007 -- although that number was without
question swelled by several hundred supporters travelling from Yorkshire.
On Thursday
the Recre was rocking and Haven, resplendent in a pink charity
strip, responded with one of their finest performances of the season to
see
off title challenging Barrow. The pink kit was in order to raise funds
for the Henderson Suite at West Cumberland Hospital – something close
to Haven hearts with promising prop
forward Andrew Jones having been treated there. Over £10,000 was
raised for the ward – an incredible effort during these difficult
economic times.
Chairman
Dick Razz, who had flown back from a business meeting in Atlanta
especially for the game said: “I wish to record my heart felt thanks
to all
those who came along to the Recre to watch the game last Thursday evening.
“We
had a record turn out for the season and managed to raise significant
funds for a much needed and very worthy local cause. It was a fabulous
community event, a real spectacle, with dance troupes, youth teams, mascots
a drum band.
“What
topped it off was a great performance on the pitch and exemplary
support from our fans off the pitch it. Wherever you turned there was
a swathe of Pink, everyone entered into the spirit of the event, the atmosphere
was positively carnival. The
fans rose to the challenge and did Copeland proud – it was a night
to
remember.”
Haven general
manager Nigel Beaty said: “We’ve been trying a few things to
get people along to the games and boost the attendances. It is always
a
worry when the game is on TV that people might choose the comfort of their
sofas and the detail of their high definition TVs – but I honestly
believe
that nothing beats watching live sport at the ground.
“There
were clearly a lot of people who turned out to support us last week
who don’t always come to the home games, for some people it might
have been
their first time ever at the Recre.
“I
can’t believe that anyone could have failed to have enjoyed the game
and
the atmosphere that was created, and all I can now ask is that, if you
did,
you come back and support us again in the future.
“Our
next home game is against Sheffield on August 2nd, and tickets are now
on sale!”

Whitehaven
Rugby League Football Club is proud to announce a formal relationship
with Super League champions Leeds Rhinos – and that one of our young
stars has signed for them. Kyle Amor, who has quickly become the cornerstone
of the Haven pack in his debut season with the club, has been snapped
up by the Rhinos after a string of top class performances for our club
in The Co-operative Championship this season.
The deal to take the talented young prop to the champions will see a link
up between Haven and the Rhinos, with Amor, 22, being available to play
for Haven for throughout the next three years – provided he isn’t
on first team duty in Yorkshire – as part of a wider partnership
agreement between the two clubs. Director Tim Knowles said: “The
club policy is that we never stand in the way of a young player wanting
to join a Super League club.
“With the way Kyle has performed this season it was a matter of time
before Super League clubs came in for him and all we could do is make
sure that we got the best deal possible. We’ve done that – this
is the best deal for the club and the best deal for Kyle.”

New Signings and Superleague Prospects
Back on the Haven Board for last night's agm (May 21st),
Mr Ralph Calvin was able to announce new signings to bolster the team.
Stating "we have got to have the team performing well to get spectators
through the turnstiles" he said a centre was to be signed from Celtic
Crusaders for a month's loan, three French players had also been signed
for a month's trial on 'good terms' and he hoped to sign three rising
academy youngsters this week.(News expected in tomorrows media)The signings
come after winger Craig Calvert's broken arm ended his season.
The meeting
heard from chairman Dick Raaz that although the accounts up to December
2008 showed a loss of £100,000, and the new board found it had inherited
a club "that had been close to demise", and had been "within
a hair's breadth of going under" things were now more positive. Treasurer
Michael Wood was able to state that HM Revenues had agreed to an 'arrangement
over time' with the club over dealing with tax owed.
Mr Raaz
said the players had, after hard negotiations, agreed to new contracts.
Under the old contracts Mr Raaz admitted that at some games expenses were
exceeding income and it had reached a point where "we couldn't afford
(financially) to win" because of the winning bonuses that had to
be paid. He said the players had come to understand that "the situation
was so dire that the contracts would have been worthless to them if they
had no club to play for."
Looking
to the future Mr Raaz hinted that progress was being made towards a new
stadium that would qualify Haven to be considered for superlague in 2011.
Both he and fellow director Tim Knowles said that the club's fight for
a long lease on the Recreation ground was now backed by the ability to
seek a compulsory purchase order. Mr Knowles a powerful figure on Copeland
Council's Executive said "We have retained legal advice...ready."
But Mr Raaz also said he hoped such a compulsory order would not be necessary
to complete negotiations. "We intend to be ready for Superleague
2011, we haven't taken our eye off the ball" added Mr Raaz. Mr Kenny
Shepherd asked whether the supporters and shareholders would be consulted
before any stadium trust deal was set up. Mr Raaz assured the sudience
that: "the club will be able to control its own future whatever stadium
trust is set up. There are no backroom deals being done." Coun Cath
Giel, another of the new directors brought in after Copeland council stepped
in as guarantors for certain loans, said: "We have strengthened the
management structure and now have two managers taking the club forward."
The club's
profit and loss accounts for the year ended December 31 2008 showed the
accumulated loss carried forward had risen from £278,191 for 2007
to £371,765 for 2008.

rejoining the side from Scotland grabbed the winning corner try after
Dexter Miller had the nowce to ground an incoming bomb that passed clean
through Calvert's waiting arms. Smith and Amor seemed to have Red Bull
wings for the duration. Haven are back again!

on heels of poor showing at Barrow Easter Monday saw Halifax totally dominate
the first half. But Haven fought back for a thrilling second half that
saw Fax not adding a single point. But superb creative play from young
Gregg McNally (Man of the Match) was not enough for the Haven fight back
to beat the final hooter. Adebisi made several bold break throughs but
none of them had the legs or support to capitalise. Whitehaven were lighter
in the pack and Halifax had the looks of a Superleague outfit, at least
in the first period. Several high tackles on McNally slipped past the
match officials yet Calvert was yellow carded in a second half spat.

Andy Gorksi and Ryan McDonald were welcomed back to the
starting line up with Chris Smith and Dexter Miller missing out on the
side despite playing their part in the match against Featherstone.
Toulouse
got off to a flying start and were 18-0 up after 11 minutes with tries
from Nathan Wynn, Sebastien Payan and Rory Bromley, Wynn adding the extras
to all three. Haven hit back on 14 minutes with Craig Benson going over
and Andy Gorski closed the gap further on 30 minutes by grabbing his first
try of the season.
Many Haven
fans would have settled for 18-12 at half time but Constant Villegas had
other ideas and crossed just before the half time hooter sounded to put
the visitors 24-12 in the lead at the break.
Haven looked
a different side after the restart with Gregg McNally scoring on 52 minutes,
his 8th try in just 3 league games. Graeme Mattinson scooted over on 65
minutes and Scott McAvoy crashed over on 69 minutes, McNally adding the
extras to all 3 tries.
John Patrick
increased the lead on 72 minutes with McNally converting. Ade Adebisi
rubbed salt in the wound for Toulouse by crossing in the final minute
to deny the visitors a bonus point.

The first half ended 6-12 to the visitors as Town had a more fluid style.
The scores were stalemated at 12-12 for the opening half of the second
spell.
Mattinson, who gained the Man of Match award opened the scoring and Marc
Jackson converted while Town responded with a try from Jack Bedley, converted
by Carl Forber. Town then went over again as ex-Haven's Neil 'Gus' Frazer
scored. Forber again converted. Before a crowd of 1,300 Mattinson missed
a chance to feed to three men waiting on the wing and soon after John
Patrick dropped the ball just yards from the open line. Eventually Leroy
Joe was able to set up John Patrick as Haven started to make inroads into
a Town side that looked on the verge of a shock win. McNally converted
Patrick's try and a penalty from McNally gave Haven a slender lead. Then
Calvert and McNally wrapped it up with McNally converting both late tries.

The Bulls
fielded a top side with eight on the bench including young Donaldson.
They dominated throughout and Whitehaven were left reeling. To add to
Whitehaven woes the referee failed to see when McNally was kicked in the
face in the first half. In the second half the talented Haven player had
to have his leg in splints as he was carried off the field of play.
Man of the Match for Whitehaven was Mark Bainbridge. Calvert twice rose
to the challenge and brought down Bulls breakaways. In the first half
John Patrickson achieved a touch down after a neat kick through from McNally
but the ref disallowed the try. In the second half Chris Smith made a
superb break on the left wing before being bundled into touch. But from
start to finish it was an icy reminder for Whitehaven that Superleague
is a whole different ball game. Young Donaldson came on in the second
half and scored a try and conversion.

Jan 2009 - Whitehaven are disappointed to announce that the appeal to
keep Dan Russell at the club has failed. The panel who determined the
outcome stated: “The Panel considered the additional information
provided following the Panel meeting of 9.1.9. The Panel did not believe
that the additional information was such as to change their view that
the player was not of a sufficient standard to warrant approval under
the discretionary criteria.” Dan, who signed from Gateshead Thunder
at the end of last season, was effected by the new policy ruling set out
by the UK Border Agency. This effectively meant that anyone working on
a holiday, student or other temporary visa will not be allowed to register
with a sporting body such as the RFL.

Board takes the Helm
To
rousing applause an extraordinary general meeting of Whitehaven RL Club
tonight welcomed a new Board led by cigar chewing US businessman Dick
Raaz. Mr Raaz who brings a wealth of professional experience to the post
will be joined on the board by Michael Wood, Barry Richardson and Copeland
councilors Tim Knowles and Cath Giel.
Mr Raaz thanked outgoing chairman Gordon Grace for his work. Mr Raaz conceded
that financially the club had 'sailed close to the wind' but he was adamant;
"the cashflow issue is manageable and the club is solvent."
The new
team was endorsed at the meeting by Steve Ferres, representing the rugby
football league. He said: "These people (the new board) will bring
a level of professionalism to this club....as the governing body we endorse
what you are doing."
While Mr
Raaz is managing director of the Drigg LLW Repository Ltd he said he was
"putting his neck on the line as an individual."
Mr Raaz said he felt "extremely proud and somewhat frightened at
the potential of what you have asked me to shoulder." He welcomed
Mr Wood "as I asked him to help us manage the sometimes tortuous
waters of financial solvency..to look after the books and produce a thorough
account of company affairs."
Among those in the egm were members of previous administrations, including
Mr Ron Batty, Mr Des Byrne, Mr Harry Edgar, Mr Dave Farrell and Mr John
Reed. At the outset of the meeting Mrs Giel confirmed the powerful role
Copeland Council holds with 30,000 shares in the 1992 company that has
a controlling interest in the main Whitehaven RL Ltd. She reminded the
meeting that the 1992 company holds over 14,000 of the 20,000 shares of
Whitehaven RL.

Standing down after 12 months as troubleshooter, Mike Graham said that
despite the refusal of CISWO to sign over a lease for the Recre, "I
do believe that we will see a new stadium in the near future." An
emergency shareholder meeting is to be held in January to select new directors.
Mr Graham thanked Copeland for their financial support and spoke of "astute
signings boding well for 2009."
The shareholders meeting on January 15 will see chairman Gordon Grace
stand down. Invitations will be invited for prospective new directors
to take over.
Meanwhile... Workington residents voted against a new shared sports
stadium in yesterday’s referendum. Out
of 18,856 people who were eligible to vote only 723 - 4 per cent - turned
out to polling stations yesterday. There were 547 against the stadium
idea, 161 agreed with it, while there were 15 spoiled papers. Allerdale
council is consulting on plans for a £31.4 million Derwent Valley
sports and leisure area redevelopment, which will house both clubs.
This move comes after plans for redevelopment hit a major impasse
....WHITEHAVEN are to take legal action to secure the right to remain
at the Recreation Ground after their landlord's parent body refused to
agree a long-term lease.
The Championship outfit's lease expired on October 31, and it is expected
their case against landlords Whitehaven Miners Welfare will go before
a judge within weeks. Miners and Haven had signed the long-term lease
that the club sought, which is required for investors to commit large-scale
funds to a major stadium redevelopment to Super League standard. But parent
body CISWO refused to rubber stamp the agreement. It is unclear why Yorkshire
based CISWO has rejected the deal.

Howard Hill’s superb effort this season was named Whitehaven
player-of-the-year. Howard was also named away supporters’ player-of-the-year
and Directors’ player. The internet supporters’ award went to
hooker Graeme Mattinson, and skipper Gary Broadbent, who has now joined
Barrow, was the support group’s top player of the campaign.

While it was 12-12 at half-time the Haven defences held under pressure
and with tries including a debut from John patrick the home side continued
Ged's run of wins.
Men of
the Match were Joe and Broadbent.
In the
first half Adibisi opened the scoring by sprinting the length of the pitch
in true Calvert style to touch down. Then it was Howard Hill who created
a way through for Rob Jackson to complete. Ben Black then scored for Halifax
and then Patterson also crossed. Haven again ignored Ged's two fingers
to miss a penalty opportunity.
In the
second period Makisi scored but for this and the next we were without
the steady boot of Manihera. Scott McAvoy also made a great burst through
run but there was nobody to act in support. John Patrick then got on the
score sheet to leave it 22-12. Leroy Joe kicked through for Calvert? to
score the final try for Haven.

Tane Manihera added the extras to put Haven 6-4 in the lead.
Haven then scored next through Adebisi
thanks to Rob Jackson. The centre drew his man in before passing to Adebisi
who ran closer to the posts before touching down. Manihera steady boot
gave Haven a 12-4 lead. The Crusaders bounced back thanks to Dalle Corte
neatly offloading to Paul Ballard Celtic took the lead before the break
with a Ben Flower try. Lennonconverted and it was14-12 to the Welsh at
half time.
Celtic watched by TV viewers opened
with a Mark Lennon penalty. However Leroy Joe put Haven did the well rehearsed
kick through for Craig Calvert to collect and touch down. Soon after big
man Ryan McDonald gathered and scored. Unconverted it was 20-16 to Haven.
Celtic faught back when Damien Quinn scooted over from close range to
touch down by the posts. Lennon added the extras to put Celtic 22 points
to 20 in the lead. It was Haven who had the final say of the afternoon
though. Gary Broadbent offloaded the ball whilst on the deck to Rob Jackson
who saw a gap and dived in for his 7th try of the season. Manihera added
the extras with 10 minutes to go. Haven defences then held to the nailbiting
