100% Haven
Workington Town
10 Whitehaven 26
Good Friday 2004
A near 1500 gate turned out for this derby game that had been
written off by many in the run up to the game. A classic it wasn't,
but there was something for both clubs to take from this keenly
fought derby Game.
For Haven: Several fringe players got some game time in a pretty
competitive clash and we beat the old enemy despite fielding
a much-weakened squad
We maintained our 100 % record in the ATC North Group
For the Town: Their squad gave a gritty display that made a nonsense
of the debacle at Barrow the previous week
Both halves of this game followed much the same pattern.
Early Town pressure, lots of commitment and some nice touches
from the Town with Neil Frazer exploiting some lazy Haven defense
to score a early try for the Town. After the first quarter Town
visibly tired and Haven dominated affairs.Carl Sice had a big
part to play in Whitehaven's response. He had a hand in the equalising
try from Craig Walsh and then finished off with the second try
himself after linking well with Jamie Marshall. Jamie Marshall
then got on the end of a kick through, but the ref to every ones
amazement disallowed it after the touch judge who was on the
spot signalled a try. Thus Haven led 10-4 at half time but they
should have had more.
As per the first period Town dominated the first 20 minutes in
the second half without being able to cross the Whitehaven line,
some resolute defence keeping Town at bay.
But three tries in the space of nine minutes from Steven Kirkbride,
Gary Purdham and Walsh, swung the game Whitehaven's way and Graeme
Lewthwaite's try - seven minutes from time - was merely a statistic.
This was a solid though hardly convincing Haven performance with
no real stand outs, probably Carl Sice and Aaron Lester when
he took the field kept Haven going forward. Town's MoM was Johhny
Limmer though I thought young Dean Burgess had a good game against
his old club.
So on now to Easter Monday , how will a full strength Haven shape
up against Leigh?
